Before I opened my first Slack’s Hoagie Shack in 1988, I must have tasted over 100 hoagies trying to find the secret to a great one. And I found it! Amoroso’s Hearth-Baked Rolls.

If you want to make a great sandwich you better start with a great roll. That’s when I decided Amoroso’s would be my first supplier. We’ve been working together ever since, almost 25 years.

The reason we started Ono Cheese Steak in Honolulu, Hawaii was because we developed an addiction to Philly Cheese Steaks while living on the Mainland in Pleasanton, California.

The sandwich became a regular meal for us a few times a week and while eating several different varieties, we came to realize the consistent ingredient to a good Philly Cheese Steak was an Amoroso’s Roll.

We planned on moving back to Honolulu but needed an idea for a business in order to generate an income. While visiting Hawaii we realized we weren’t able to satisfy our Philly Cheese Steak cravings due to the unavailability of an authentic sandwich. And Ono Cheese Steak was born.

We started with a downtown location in Honolulu and used Amoroso’s Rolls from the very beginning. Because of this, Ono Cheese Steak became known as the only restaurant in Hawaii serving an authentic Philly Cheese Steak.

By the end of 2005, we had 3 locations including our flagship store in Waikiki open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Naturally, we get a lot of people from Philadelphia coming in and many are skeptical. They say, “How can you serve an authentic Philly Cheese Steak in Hawaii?” And we say, “We use Amoroso’s Rolls!” Their eyes light up, they smile from ear to ear and order a sandwich. And they become part of the Ono Cheese Steak “Ohana” (Hawaiian for “family).

Today, we deliver to over 60 locations on a daily basis including both military and civilian customers on the island of Ohau. Our sales require more than 2000 Amoroso’s Rolls every day. Amazing!

My name is Jim Russo and I am a resident of Westerville, Ohio which is a suburb of Columbus, Ohio. When I was in California recently I had the incredible pleasure of eating one of Amoroso's Hearth-Baked cheese-steak rolls at one of your "Honor Roll" restaurants called "Cheese Steak". It was the best sandwich that I have ever eaten. Unfortunately, the "Cheese Steak" restaurant does not reside in the Columbus metro area and need to fulfill my craving for the cheese steak sandwich. So, I called the CA restaurant and they were gracious enough to provide me their recipe. They emphasized the key to the sandwich was the Amoroso bread and they are absolutely correct. I have tried to recreate the sandwich with substitute rolls and they do not even come close to the Amoroso roll.
